Snowy Egret

Perhaps you've noticed from my last few shots that I've got a new lens; it's a Canon 75-300mm with image stabilization. I've seen a lot of on-line line counters slagging this lens off but I really couldn't justify spending the money on an 'L' series equivalent, especially for a lens that I probably won't use that often. With the 1.6x digital 'magnification' this lens has some reach and the IS really works and makes a difference.

This little guy (a snowy egret I think), or his predecessor, has been my model before but I've never been able to get the shot without digital zoom and/or cropping. He fishes on our office campus where an inlet from the bay lets water from the tide push into an ornamental lake. He's used to people passing by but not so used to someone thrusting a long telephoto lens in his face. Anyway, the lens seems to do the job for the money and I'm looking forward to taking it on safari to the zoo next; maybe this weekend.
